Common questions
How much is the 2026 50 Pence - Charles III (Aardman Animations) worth?
No verified sale of the 2026 50 Pence - Charles III (Aardman Animations) has been logged on MyCoinage yet.
What is the difference between the two Aardman 50p coins?
The Royal Mint sold the cupro-nickel Aardman 50p in two finishes. One is a plain Brilliant Uncirculated coin. The other has the same design with colour printing on the reverse, comes in pop-out packaging and has a stated maximum mintage of 12,503.
Can you find the Aardman 50p in change?
Not as an issued circulating coin. The Royal Mint sold it to collectors from 9 June 2026 and has announced no release through banks or post offices. Any example found in change was bought first and then spent.
How many coloured Aardman 50p coins are there?
The Royal Mint gives a maximum coin mintage of 12,503 for the colour Brilliant Uncirculated version. That is an upper limit set at launch. The Mint has not published how many were sold, and it states no limit for the plain coin.
Is the Aardman 50p legal tender?
Yes. The royal proclamation that authorised the design states that the cupro-nickel coin is legal tender for the payment of any amount in any part of the United Kingdom. In practice it was sold as a collectable and not issued for everyday use.
How do I identify the 2026 50 Pence - Charles III (Aardman Animations)?
Check the weight 8g and diameter 27.3mm and the metal (copper-nickel) against the specification table on this page. The reverse design is described above.
History and design
Aardman reached its 50th anniversary in 2026, and the Royal Mint marked it with a 50p released on 9 June that year. The Mint's announcement ran through the studio's output, from Morph and Chas to Wallace and Gromit and Shaun the Sheep, and dated its first production to 1976. The coin was made in partnership with the studio.
This entry covers the cupro-nickel coin, which the Mint sold in two finishes: plain, and with colour printing. Neither was issued for circulation. Both were sold in packs from the Mint's website, and the Royal Mint's circulating mintage figures contain nothing dated 2026 so far.
Aardman supplied the reverse design itself. Five characters are arranged around the studio's logo and star: Morph, Feathers McGraw, Gromit, Wallace and Shaun the Sheep. The inscription given in the royal proclamation is " AARDMAN 50 YEARS!". On the colour version the same design is printed in colour, which the Mint says brings each character to life on metal.
The obverse has the Martin Jennings portrait of King Charles III, the inscription CHARLES III D G REX F D 50 PENCE and the date 2026. The edge is plain, and the coin matches a circulating 50p in size, weight and alloy.
Collecting notes
No recognised varieties or mint errors are documented for this coin.
Start by working out which finish you have. The plain Brilliant Uncirculated coin came in a printed pack about the studio's history, and the Mint states no limit for it. The colour coin came in pop-out packaging and carries a stated maximum of 12,503, a limit and not a sales figure.
Packaging matters with coins like this. A coin still sealed in its Royal Mint pack is as issued, while a loose one should be checked for fingerprints and contact marks, and a colour coin for scratches in the printed surface.
The same design was also struck as a colour-printed silver proof (maximum 5,011) and a gold proof (maximum 110). The first entry for this design is the Aardman 50p.
