History and design

This is a collector version of the 50 Pence - Elizabeth II – Team GB Olympics. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.

The Team GB 50p was issued in 2016 to support the British team at the Rio Olympic Games. The proclamation that fixed its design, made on 15 March 2016, describes coins "to celebrate Team GB at the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games".

In the Royal Mint's figures it is the only Olympic 50p struck for circulation since the 29 sport designs dated 2011, the coins of London 2012. The Royal Mint's own blog made the link at the time, noting that many people were still hunting for those 29 coins and could now add the Team GB coin.

The Royal Mint's figures give 6,400,000 struck for circulation. That is far more than any single coin of the 2011 series, where the highest figure is 3,345,500 for Archery. Among the seven commemorative 50p designs dated 2016 it is the third lowest, above Jemima Puddle-Duck (2,100,000) and Squirrel Nutkin (5,000,000).

The reverse shows a swimmer in mid-butterfly stroke beneath the Team GB logo and the Olympic rings, with the inscription TEAM GB. The Royal Mint's design listing credits Tim Sharp.

The Mint's blog interviewed Peter Blake of the design agency Uniform, who described the work as a team effort. He said the swimmer is not a specific athlete and was chosen for a "dramatic" pose at the peak of the stroke, with the water used to show movement and energy. A U on the coin stands for Uniform, in place of a designer's initials.

The obverse carries the fifth portrait of the Queen, by Jody Clark, with the inscription ELIZABETH II D G REG F D 50 PENCE 2016. The value and date are on the obverse. The edge is plain.
