History and design

This is a collector version of the 50 Pence - Elizabeth II – XX Commonwealth Games. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.

Glasgow hosted the 20th Commonwealth Games in 2014, and the Royal Mint issued a 50p to mark them. The royal proclamation was made on 6 November 2013 and came into force the next day. It ordered the coin in cupro-nickel, silver, silver piedfort and gold.

The design came from a competition. The consultancy tangerine says its team, led by Dan Flashman, beat more than fifty competitors for the commission, and that the coin was already in circulation before the Games opened.

The Royal Mint's figures give 6,500,000 struck for circulation. It was the only commemorative 50p struck for circulation with a 2014 date, against 49,001,000 standard Royal Shield coins that year. Among its neighbours it falls between the 2013 Christopher Ironside coin at 7,000,000 and the 2015 Battle of Britain coin at 5,900,000.

The Royal Mint credits the reverse to Alex Loudon with Dan Flashman. It shows a cyclist and a sprinter, with the Scottish Saltire bisecting the coin, the inscription XX COMMONWEALTH GAMES GLASGOW and the date 2014. According to tangerine, the cycling motif was inspired by Sir Chris Hoy.

Loudon said of the flag: "We used the Scottish Saltire in a very subtle way, but the final design was one people could recognise and understand." Kevin Clancy, Director of the Royal Mint Museum and secretary of the advisory committee, praised "the spirit, the imagination and the intelligence" of the entry.

The reverse has no value on it, so FIFTY PENCE appears on the obverse beside Ian Rank-Broadley's fourth portrait of the Queen. The edge is plain.
