Common questions
How much is the 2026 50 Pence - Charles III (Lord of the Rings: - The One Ring) worth?

Is the Lord of the Rings 50p in circulation?
No release into circulation has been announced. The Royal Mint announced it on 20 May 2026 as a collectable 50p sold through its website, and its circulating mintage data lists no Lord of the Rings 50p. One found in change would have been spent by a buyer.
How many Lord of the Rings One Ring 50p coins were made?
No figure has been published for the plain Brilliant Uncirculated coin, which had no stated limit. The Royal Mint's product pages give maximum coin mintages of 20,010 for the colour edition, 8,261 for the silver proof colour coin and 135 for the gold proof.
Does the Lord of the Rings 50p show a hidden Eye of Sauron?
The Royal Mint says the gold and silver editions carry a caustic feature, a surface engineered to focus light and project the Eye of Sauron, which it calls a first for a UK coin. Its descriptions of the cupro-nickel coins do not mention the feature.
Who designed the Lord of the Rings One Ring 50p?
The Royal Mint's press release names Thomas T. Docherty, one of its own designers, as the designer of the reverse. The specification on its product pages credits New Line Productions, Inc., the rights holder. The obverse portrait of King Charles III is by Martin Jennings.
How many Lord of the Rings 50p coins will there be?
Seven. The Royal Mint says the One Ring coin is the first of a seven-coin collection, with later releases timed to the 25th anniversaries of the three films. The proclamation of July 2026 already describes two further designs, one showing Sauron and one showing Frodo and Sam.
How do I identify the 2026 50 Pence - Charles III (Lord of the Rings: - The One Ring)?
Check the weight 8g and diameter 27.3mm and the metal (copper-nickel) against the specification table on this page. The reverse design is described above.
History and design
The One Ring 50p is the first Lord of the Rings coin from the Royal Mint, announced on 20 May 2026. It marks 25 years since Peter Jackson's film The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring reached cinemas, and was made with Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products. The Mint describes it as the first of seven 50p coins, with later releases timed to the 25th anniversaries of the three films.
The base-metal coin was struck in two forms: a plain Brilliant Uncirculated coin with no stated limit, and one with colour printing sold as a limited edition of 20,000. Both were collector products. No release into circulation has been announced, the Mint's circulating mintage data lists no such coin, and no sales figures have been published.
The Royal Mint's press release credits the reverse to Thomas T. Docherty, one of its own designers. It centres on the One Ring, with the Eye of Sauron framed inside it and the Elvish lettering of the Ring's inscription around it. The royal proclamation puts it briefly: "a depiction of the One Ring surrounded by Elvish text, with the eye of Sauron".
The obverse carries the portrait of King Charles III by Martin Jennings, with CHARLES III D G REX F D 50 PENCE and the date 2026. The edge is plain.
Varieties and errors
The plain and colour-printed coins are separate products made on purpose. The colour edition has a maximum coin mintage of 20,010.
The Mint also promoted a caustic feature, a surface engineered to focus light so that a hidden Eye of Sauron is projected from the centre of the Ring, which it calls a first for a UK coin. Its range page says this applies to the gold and silver editions. A base-metal coin that does not project the image is therefore not an error. No mint errors are documented.
Collecting notes
Each coin came in packaging printed with a map of Middle-earth, designed so that the seven packs can be displayed together. Subscribers to the full collection were offered a card case to hold all seven. A coin still in its pack is the complete item.
The other catalogue entry for this design is the One Ring 50p.
The silver proof, which is colour printed, has a maximum coin mintage of 8,261 and the 22 carat gold proof 135. These are ceilings set at launch, not totals sold.
