Common questions

How much is the 2026 50 Pence - Charles III (Lord of the Rings: - The One Ring) worth?

Verified sold prices for the 2026 50 Pence - Charles III (Lord of the Rings: - The One Ring) run from £8.66 to £68.99 across 3 grades, taking the median for each grade. Condition makes the difference, so check the grade table above before pricing one.

Is the Lord of the Rings 50p in circulation?

No. The Royal Mint launched the One Ring 50p on 20 May 2026 as a collectable coin sold from its website, finished to a finer standard than circulating coins. No release through banks or post offices has been announced, though the coin is legal tender.

How many One Ring 50p coins were made?

No figure has been published for the standard Brilliant Uncirculated coin. The Royal Mint states maximum mintages of 20,010 for the colour Brilliant Uncirculated coin, 8,261 for the silver proof colour coin and 135 for the gold proof. These are limits, not sales figures.

Who designed the Lord of the Rings 50p?

The Royal Mint's launch release names Thomas T. Docherty, one of its own designers, as the creator of the reverse. The Mint's specification tables credit New Line Productions, the rights holder. The obverse portrait of King Charles III is by Martin Jennings.

Does the standard One Ring 50p show the hidden Eye of Sauron?

The Eye of Sauron is part of the design on every version. The caustic feature, which uses the coin's surface to focus light and project the Eye, is described by the Royal Mint as belonging to the gold and silver editions, not the cupro-nickel coin.

How many Lord of the Rings 50p coins will there be?

Seven. The Royal Mint says the One Ring coin is the first of a seven-coin collection, with later releases timed to the 25th anniversaries of the three films. A proclamation of July 2026 already describes two designs for The Fellowship of the Ring.

How do I identify the 2026 50 Pence - Charles III (Lord of the Rings: - The One Ring)?

Check the weight 8g and diameter 27.3mm and the metal (copper-nickel) against the specification table on this page. The reverse design is described above.

History and design

The One Ring 50p was launched on 20 May 2026 to mark 25 years since Peter Jackson's film The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring reached cinemas. The Royal Mint made it in collaboration with Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products and announced it as the first of seven 50p coins, with the rest to follow over three years as each film in the trilogy reaches its own 25th anniversary.

It is a collector coin. The Mint sold it from its website and describes the cupro-nickel version as finished to a finer standard than circulating coins. No release into circulation has been announced, the Royal Mint's circulating mintage figures have no entries dated 2026 yet, and no sales figure has been published.

The reverse centres on the One Ring. The royal proclamation describes it as "a depiction of the One Ring surrounded by Elvish text, with the eye of Sauron". The lettering is the inscription on the Ring itself, which the Mint ties to the verse beginning "One Ring to rule them all". The proclamation gives no inscription in English. The Mint's launch release names Thomas T. Docherty, one of its own designers, as the designer.

The gold and silver editions add what the Mint calls a caustic feature, which it says is a first on a UK coin: the surface is shaped to focus light and project a hidden image of the Eye of Sauron. The Mint attributes this to the precious-metal editions, not the cupro-nickel coin.

The obverse carries the portrait of King Charles III by Martin Jennings with the inscription CHARLES III D G REX F D 50 PENCE and the date 2026. The edge is plain.

Collecting notes

No recognised varieties or mint errors are documented for this coin.

The cupro-nickel coin was sold in two finishes: a plain Brilliant Uncirculated coin with no stated limit, and a colour-printed one limited to a maximum of 20,010. Both came in packaging about the making and story of the Ring, designed around the map of Middle-earth so that the seven coins can be displayed together.

The silver proof colour coin has a maximum of 8,261 and the gold proof a maximum of 135. These are issue limits, not sales figures. A buyer who wants the light-projection effect needs one of these two.

The Royal Mint has honoured the author before, with the JRR Tolkien £2 of 2023.
