Who designed the Jody Clark Portrait £5?

The portrait is Jody Clark's fifth definitive effigy of Elizabeth II, first used in 2015. Gordon Summers, Chief Engraver at the Royal Mint, remastered it for this coin and is credited as reverse designer. The portrait of King Charles III on the obverse is by Martin Jennings.

How many Jody Clark Portrait £5 coins were made?

What crown is the Queen wearing on the Jody Clark portrait?

The Royal Mint describes it as the Royal Diamond Diadem from her coronation. The Royal Mint Museum adds that she wore it for the coronation in 1953 and that Clark chose it to link his design to the past, since it had also featured on Raphael Maklouf's portrait.

History and design

Portraits of a Queen is the Royal Mint's set of five £5 crowns dated 2026, the centenary year of Queen Elizabeth II's birth. Each coin brings back one of her five definitive coinage portraits. This fifth and final release revives the effigy by Jody Clark, introduced in 2015, the year she became Britain's longest-reigning monarch.

Clark's portrait came out of a closed competition held by the Royal Mint Advisory Committee in 2015. Designers at the Royal Mint were among those invited, and every entry was submitted anonymously so it could be judged on its merits. The winning design was approved by the Treasury and by the Queen herself. The Royal Mint notes that this made Clark the first Royal Mint designer in more than 100 years to create the definitive portrait, the last being George William de Saulles with Edward VII in 1902.

Clark said every entrant received the same reference images, and that he also searched for more natural, unposed pictures of the Queen and studied the earlier effigies so that his design would sit with them as a set.

The reverse carries Clark's portrait, remastered by Gordon Summers, Chief Engraver at the Royal Mint, on a field of engraved radial lines that the Mint says catch the light as the coin turns. The Queen wears the Royal Diamond Diadem from her coronation. The Royal Mint Museum says Clark chose it to link his design to the past, as it had also appeared on Raphael Maklouf's portrait. The proclamation gives the inscription as PORTRAIT OF A QUEEN 2015-2022.

The obverse has Martin Jennings's portrait of King Charles III, the inscription CHARLES III D G REX F D 5 POUNDS and the date 2026, which the Mint presents as uniting mother and son. The edge is milled.

Collecting notes

No recognised varieties or mint errors are documented for this coin.

The Royal Mint has published no struck or sold figure for the Brilliant Uncirculated crown. It came in a pack telling the story of Clark's portrait and was also sold in a five-coin collection with the other four portraits.

Silver proof, silver proof piedfort and gold proof versions share the design. The Mint's product data lists a limited edition presentation of 3,900 for the silver proof, 1,500 for the piedfort and 150 for the gold proof, all issue limits. Collectors of modern crowns already know this portrait from the other side of the coin: the Mint lists Clark as obverse designer of the £5 from 2015 to 2022.

The coin is legal tender, but the Royal Mint describes crowns as souvenirs and says banks are not required to accept them. The earlier releases include the Mary Gillick portrait and the Ian Rank-Broadley portrait.
