History and design

This is a collector version of the 5 Pounds - Charles III Queen Elizabeth II: The Jody Clark Portrait. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.

Portraits of a Queen is the Royal Mint's set of five £5 crowns dated 2026, the centenary year of Queen Elizabeth II's birth. Each coin brings back one of her five definitive coinage portraits. This fifth and final release revives the effigy by Jody Clark, introduced in 2015, the year she became Britain's longest-reigning monarch.

Clark's portrait came out of a closed competition held by the Royal Mint Advisory Committee in 2015. Designers at the Royal Mint were among those invited, and every entry was submitted anonymously so it could be judged on its merits. The winning design was approved by the Treasury and by the Queen herself. The Royal Mint notes that this made Clark the first Royal Mint designer in more than 100 years to create the definitive portrait, the last being George William de Saulles with Edward VII in 1902.

Clark said every entrant received the same reference images, and that he also searched for more natural, unposed pictures of the Queen and studied the earlier effigies so that his design would sit with them as a set.

The reverse carries Clark's portrait, remastered by Gordon Summers, Chief Engraver at the Royal Mint, on a field of engraved radial lines that the Mint says catch the light as the coin turns. The Queen wears the Royal Diamond Diadem from her coronation. The Royal Mint Museum says Clark chose it to link his design to the past, as it had also appeared on Raphael Maklouf's portrait. The proclamation gives the inscription as PORTRAIT OF A QUEEN 2015-2022.

The obverse has Martin Jennings's portrait of King Charles III, the inscription CHARLES III D G REX F D 5 POUNDS and the date 2026, which the Mint presents as uniting mother and son. The edge is milled.
