Common questions

How much is the 2026 5 Pounds - Charles III (Pink Floyd) worth?

The 2026 5 Pounds - Charles III (Pink Floyd) has a price in one grade on MyCoinage so far: £15.08 in BU, the median of its verified sales.

Is there a colour Pink Floyd £5 coin?

Yes. The Royal Mint sold a Brilliant Uncirculated colour coin alongside the plain one. Both are cupro-nickel, 28.28g, with a milled edge and Henry Gray's design. The colour version carries a rainbow prism effect; the plain version is bare metal.

Who designed the Pink Floyd £5?

Henry Gray designed the reverse, built around the prism from The Dark Side of the Moon. The Royal Mint also credits him with £5 coins for The Who, John Lennon and Freddie Mercury. The obverse portrait of King Charles III is by Martin Jennings.

Is the colour Pink Floyd £5 a limited edition?

The Royal Mint's product page for the colour coin shows no maximum coin mintage, and neither does the page for the plain coin. No struck or sold figures have been published, and the Mint's sales pages currently stop at 2023-dated coins.

Can you spend a Pink Floyd £5 coin?

It is legal tender for any amount under the 2026 royal proclamation that authorised it. In practice the Royal Mint says the £5 coin does not circulate and most retailers do not accept it, and that banks are not required to take crowns.

How do I identify the 2026 5 Pounds - Charles III (Pink Floyd)?

Check the weight 28.28g and diameter 38.61mm and the metal (copper-nickel) against the specification table on this page. The reverse design is described above.

History and design

Pink Floyd's £5 crown was authorised by a royal proclamation given on 3 February 2026, the same one that authorised the Spice Girls coins, and the Royal Mint launched it on 14 May 2026. The Mint presented it as the band's first appearance on a UK coin, more than half a century after Pink Floyd emerged from the London underground scene.

Rebecca Morgan, the Mint's Director of Commemorative Coin, said the prism is instantly recognisable to fans around the world. The coin is part of Music Legends, which the Royal Mint's £5 list opens with Queen in 2020 and which has since covered acts from Elton John to Iron Maiden.

Two cupro-nickel versions were sold, plain and colour. Both are collector coins and neither was issued for circulation.

Henry Gray built the reverse around the prism from the sleeve of The Dark Side of the Moon (1973), one of the best-selling albums of all time. The proclamation describes it as a prism refracting a beam of light into a colour spectrum, with the inscriptions PINK FLOYD and THE DARK SIDE OF THE MOON. On the colour version the Mint adds what it calls a rainbow prism effect.

Gray's other crowns for the Royal Mint include the 2020 British Red Cross £5, The Who in 2021 and Buckingham Palace in 2024. The obverse carries Martin Jennings's portrait of King Charles III with CHARLES III D G REX F D 5 POUNDS and the date. The edge is milled.

Collecting notes

No recognised varieties or mint errors are documented for this coin.

This entry and its twin on the site correspond to the plain and colour coins, but which is which is not recorded. Look at the reverse: colour printing means the colour coin. Both are the same size and weight, and the Mint has published no issue limit or sales total for either.

Colour printing is a surface layer and can wear or scratch, so examine a loose colour coin closely. Gold and silver proofs were also made with the design. The Royal Mint additionally sold Pink Floyd plectrums in gold, silver and dark chrome, which are not coins. The other entry is the Pink Floyd £5.
