Common questions

How much is the 2026 5 Pounds - Charles III Queen Elizabeth II: The Ian Rank-Broadley Portrait worth?

No verified sale of the 2026 5 Pounds - Charles III Queen Elizabeth II: The Ian Rank-Broadley Portrait has been logged on MyCoinage yet.

Who designed the Ian Rank-Broadley Portrait £5?

The portrait is the fourth definitive effigy of Elizabeth II by the sculptor Ian Rank-Broadley, released into circulation in early 1998. Gordon Summers, Chief Engraver at the Royal Mint, remastered it for this coin and is credited as reverse designer. The obverse portrait of King Charles III is by Martin Jennings.

How many Rank-Broadley Portrait £5 coins were made?

The Royal Mint has published no struck or sold figure for the Brilliant Uncirculated coin and states no limit for it. Its product pages show a limited edition presentation of 3,900 for the silver proof and 1,500 for the silver proof piedfort, which are issue limits.

Can I spend the Rank-Broadley Portrait £5?

It is legal tender under its royal proclamation, but shops are not obliged to take it. The Royal Mint says crowns are souvenirs rather than coins for everyday use, that banks are not required to accept them, and that main Post Office branches will exchange them for goods or services.

What do the dates 1998-2015 on the coin mean?

The reverse reads PORTRAIT OF A QUEEN 1998-2015. Rank-Broadley's effigy entered circulation in early 1998, and the Royal Mint's £5 specifications list him as obverse designer from 1998 to 2015, when Jody Clark's fifth portrait replaced it. The coin's own date, 2026, is on the obverse.

Was the Rank-Broadley Portrait £5 sold in a set?

Yes. Besides its own Brilliant Uncirculated pack, the Royal Mint sold all five Portraits of a Queen crowns together as a Brilliant Uncirculated five-coin collection, with matching five-coin collections in silver proof, silver proof piedfort and gold proof.

How do I identify the 2026 5 Pounds - Charles III Queen Elizabeth II: The Ian Rank-Broadley Portrait?

History and design

Portraits of a Queen is a set of five £5 crowns dated 2026, the centenary year of Queen Elizabeth II's birth, each reproducing one of the definitive portraits from her coinage. The fourth release revives the effigy by Ian Rank-Broadley, which the Royal Mint dates to 1998 and which gave way to Jody Clark's portrait in 2015.

Rank-Broadley was invited in 1996 to take part in the competition for a new royal portrait. The Royal Mint quotes him as wanting a portrait that was clearly recognisable and would read well in the low relief of coinage. He chose not to idealise his sitter, saying that it was "essential to the integrity of the project for the portrait to be a recognisable one, and not over-idealised".

He submitted three versions of his model to the Royal Mint Advisory Committee. The changes worked through with the committee included introducing the hint of a smile, which he said was difficult because altering one feature changes the whole look of the face. The finished effigy entered circulation in early 1998.

The reverse shows Rank-Broadley's portrait remastered by Gordon Summers, Chief Engraver at the Royal Mint, set against engraved radial lines that the Mint says catch the light when the coin is turned. The proclamation gives the inscription as PORTRAIT OF A QUEEN 1998-2015. The Royal Mint Museum notes that most coins had become smaller by 1998, so the original portrait was made to fill much of the surface.

The obverse has the portrait of King Charles III by Martin Jennings, the inscription CHARLES III D G REX F D 5 POUNDS and the date 2026. The edge is milled. Summers is the credited reverse designer.

Collecting notes

No recognised varieties or mint errors are documented for this coin.

The Royal Mint has published no struck or sold figure for this Brilliant Uncirculated crown. It was sold in a pack about the portrait and in a five-coin collection, so loose examples have left their packaging and should be checked for handling marks.

Silver proof, silver proof piedfort and gold proof versions share the design. The Mint lists a limited edition presentation of 3,900 for the silver proof and 1,500 for the piedfort, both issue limits. Rank-Broadley's portrait is already familiar on crowns: the Mint names him as obverse designer of the £5 coin from 1998 to 2015.

The coin is legal tender, though the Royal Mint describes crowns as souvenirs and says banks are not required to accept them. Its neighbours in the set are the Raphael Maklouf portrait and the Jody Clark portrait.
