What is on the Pink Floyd £5 coin?

The prism from the sleeve of The Dark Side of the Moon (1973), refracting a beam of light into a spectrum. The royal proclamation gives the inscriptions PINK FLOYD and THE DARK SIDE OF THE MOON. The sleeve was designed by Storm Thorgerson of Hipgnosis and drawn by George Hardie.

When was the Pink Floyd coin released?

The Royal Mint unveiled it and put it on sale at 9am on 14 May 2026. The Mint described it as the first time Pink Floyd had been honoured on a UK coin, and it joined the Music Legends series alongside David Bowie, Freddie Mercury and Paul McCartney.

How many Pink Floyd £5 coins were made?

The Royal Mint has not published a struck or sold figure, and neither its plain nor its colour Brilliant Uncirculated product page shows a maximum mintage. The Mint's commemorative coin sales pages currently stop at coins dated 2023.

Is the Pink Floyd £5 coin legal tender?

Yes. The royal proclamation makes it legal tender for any amount in the United Kingdom. The Royal Mint says the £5 coin is a commemorative issue that does not circulate and that most retailers do not accept it for everyday transactions.

How do I identify the 2026 5 Pounds - Charles III (Pink Floyd)?

Check the weight 28.28g and diameter 38.61mm and the metal (copper-nickel) against the specification table on this page. The reverse design is described above.

History and design

The Royal Mint unveiled this £5 on 14 May 2026, calling it the first time Pink Floyd had been honoured on a UK coin. It joined the Music Legends series, which the Mint says has delivered nearly half a million coins to collectors and music fans in 108 countries, and whose earlier subjects include David Bowie, Shirley Bassey, George Michael, Paul McCartney and Freddie Mercury.

The press release recalls a band formed in London in 1965 by Syd Barrett, Roger Waters, Nick Mason and Richard Wright, with David Gilmour joining in 1968. The Dark Side of the Moon followed in 1973, then Wish You Were Here, Animals and The Wall. The Mint says The Dark Side of the Moon has sold over 50 million copies.

The coin was sold to collectors in plain and colour Brilliant Uncirculated versions from the launch day. Neither was made for circulation.

The reverse, by Henry Gray, places the prism from The Dark Side of the Moon at its centre: the proclamation describes a prism refracting a beam of light into a colour spectrum, with the inscriptions PINK FLOYD and THE DARK SIDE OF THE MOON. The original sleeve was designed by Storm Thorgerson of Hipgnosis and drawn by George Hardie. The colour coin carries what the Mint calls a rainbow prism effect, bringing the design to life in full colour.

Gray is a regular Music Legends designer, also credited with the John Lennon £5 and the Freddie Mercury £5 of 2025. The obverse has Martin Jennings's portrait of King Charles III with CHARLES III D G REX F D 5 POUNDS and the date. The edge is milled.

Collecting notes

No recognised varieties or mint errors are documented for this coin.

The site lists two entries under the same name, which match the two Royal Mint versions: plain cupro-nickel and colour-printed. Tell them apart by the reverse: the colour coin has the rainbow prism effect printed on it, the plain coin is bare metal. Neither version has a published issue limit or sales figure.

On a loose coin check the open field around the prism for handling marks, and the printed colour for scuffs. Gold and silver proofs in several sizes were sold with the design, and the Mint also made Pink Floyd plectrums designed by Daniel Thorne, which are not coins. The other entry is the Pink Floyd £5.
