Why does the 500 Years of the Crown £5 say 1526?
The reverse reads ANNIVERSARY OF THE GOLD CROWN with the dates 1526 and 2026. The Royal Mint says the design is inspired by the 1526 crown. A silver crown followed later; the Mint dates the original silver crown, with a face value of five shillings, to 1551.
What are the roses around the King's portrait?
They are a border unique to this coin. The Royal Mint says the five roses each mark a century since the first crowns of 1526, separated by elongated beading of the kind seen on coins struck without a collar, where the metal spreads during striking.
Whose cyphers are on the 500 Years of the Crown £5?
The royal proclamation describes the reverse as a crowned Tudor rose within a rose vine, with the King's Royal cypher and the cypher of Queen Camilla. The Royal Mint says including both cyphers ties the coin's history to the modern monarchy.

History and design
This £5 marks five centuries of the crown as a denomination. The Royal Mint says Timothy Noad's design is inspired by the 1526 crown, and the reverse inscription calls it the anniversary of the gold crown, with the dates 1526 and 2026. The Mint's own history of the coin dates the first silver crown, worth five shillings, to 1551, and traces the denomination through its change to 25p at decimalisation and to £5 in the 1990s.
The crown kept its size through those changes. The Royal Mint gives it as 38.61mm and 28.28g, and says the large flan gives artists room for detailed designs. This coin is a Brilliant Uncirculated collector issue; the Mint states plainly that the £5 coin is commemorative and does not circulate.
The royal proclamation describes the reverse as a crowned Tudor rose surrounded by a rose vine, with the King's Royal cypher and the cypher of Queen Camilla, the inscription ANNIVERSARY OF THE GOLD CROWN and the dates 1526 and 2026. The Royal Mint says the two cyphers join the coin's history to the modern monarchy. Noad, a heraldic artist, also drew the King's new Royal Arms used on the 2025 Coat of Arms £5.
The obverse is unusual. Martin Jennings's portrait of King Charles III, with CHARLES III D G REX F D 5 POUNDS and the date, is encircled by a border of five roses, one for each century since 1526. Between them is elongated beading of the kind found on coins struck without a collar, where the metal spreads as it is struck. The Mint notes that the rose was used as a privy mark under Edward IV. The edge is milled.
Collecting notes
No recognised varieties or mint errors are documented for this coin.
The rose border is the feature to check: the beads and petals sit at the rim, where knocks show first. The Royal Mint has published no mintage or issue limit for the cupro-nickel coin.
The design was also struck as a silver proof, a silver proof piedfort and a gold proof, and the Mint says each gold coin in the range is in yellow gold to reflect the original sixteenth-century crown. It is legal tender, but the Royal Mint says most retailers do not accept £5 coins for everyday spending.
