The Royal Mint began its Shēngxiào Collection in 2014, uniting British and Chinese traditions in the first official UK lunar coins. The series follows the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac, and the Mint calls the Year of the Snake of 2025 its twelfth instalment. With the 2026 Year of the Horse the collection starts afresh, and the Mint describes this crown as the only official UK coin celebrating the Year of the Horse in 2026.
The horse is the seventh symbol in the 12-year zodiac cycle. The Mint presents the coin as a fusion of British craftsmanship and Chinese tradition and sold it as a gift: the Brilliant Uncirculated coin comes in packaging that reflects Chinese culture and with a traditional red envelope.
