History and design
The Royal Mint issued five £5 crowns dated 2026, the centenary year of Queen Elizabeth II's birth, under the title Portraits of a Queen. Each reproduces one of the five definitive portraits that appeared on her coins. This is the third release, and it brings back the effigy by Raphael Maklouf that was introduced in 1985.
Maklouf was invited by the Royal Mint Advisory Committee to enter the competition for a new portrait. The Mint records that he was unhappy with the profile photograph supplied to the artists, and said so to the Queen when introduced to her at a royal garden party. His model was chosen and she granted him two live sittings, at which he worked directly in clay.
The result was criticised by some as flatteringly young. Maklouf rejected that, saying his aim was to sculpt a symbol and not just a photographic image.
The reverse shows Maklouf's portrait, remastered by Gordon Summers, Chief Engraver at the Royal Mint, against a field of engraved radial lines. The Royal Mint Museum describes the effigy as showing the Queen with the royal diadem she wore to and from the State Opening of Parliament, together with a necklace and earrings. The proclamation gives the inscription as PORTRAIT OF A QUEEN 1985-1997.
The obverse carries the portrait of King Charles III by Martin Jennings with the inscription CHARLES III D G REX F D 5 POUNDS and the date 2026. The edge is milled. Summers is the credited reverse designer, although the likeness is Maklouf's.

This is a Brilliant Uncirculated collector coin and the Royal Mint has published no struck or sold figure for it. It was sold in a pack about Maklouf's portrait and as part of a five-coin collection. Collectors who remember the first £5 crowns will know this effigy from them: the Mint lists Maklouf as the obverse designer of the £5 coin from 1990 to 1997.
The design was also struck as a silver proof, a silver proof piedfort and a gold proof. The Mint lists a limited edition presentation of 3,900 for the silver proof and 1,500 for the piedfort. These are issue limits.
The coin is legal tender, but the Royal Mint says crowns are intended as souvenirs and that banks are not required to accept them. The portraits either side of it in the set are the Arnold Machin portrait and the Ian Rank-Broadley portrait.
