History and design

This is a collector version of the 50 Pence - Elizabeth II – People Act 1918. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.

This 50p marks the centenary of the Representation of the People Act 1918. The Royal Mint describes the Act as a key step towards modern democracy: it extended the vote to all men over the age of 21 and to women over 30 who met certain property qualifications.

The proclamation for the coin was made on 15 November 2017, ahead of the anniversary year, and provided for gold, silver, silver piedfort and cupro-nickel versions.

The Royal Mint's figures give 9,000,000 struck for circulation. That is the highest of the 50p commemoratives dated 2018 in those figures, ahead of the two Paddington coins and all four Beatrix Potter coins. It is also close to three times the 3,124,030 of the 2003 Suffragette 50p, the earlier 50p on the theme of votes for women.

Stephen Taylor designed the reverse. The proclamation describes it as a depiction of a line of people accompanied by the inscription 1918 REPRESENTATION OF THE PEOPLE ACT. The Royal Mint says the figures are in period dress, waiting to cast their vote for the first time, and represent a cross-section of society. The inscription runs above them.

The obverse carries the fifth portrait of the Queen, by Jody Clark, wearing the George IV State Diadem, with the inscription ELIZABETH II D G REG F D 50 PENCE 2018. The value and the date are on the obverse. The edge is plain.
