How many 2024 Year of the Dragon £5 coins were made?

The Royal Mint has not published a struck or sold figure for this coin. Its commemorative sales pages end with coins dated 2023, and the Brilliant Uncirculated product page states no issue limit, so there is no official mintage to quote.

Who designed the Year of the Dragon £5?

William Webb, a freelance designer and illustrator from St Leonards-on-Sea in East Sussex. It was his first coin, after several unsuccessful entries to coin design competitions. He took inspiration from Hokusai's dragon paintings and woodcuts and from Chinese sculpted dragon heads.

Is this the first Lunar £5 with King Charles III?

Yes. The Royal Mint calls it the first Lunar coin to feature the official coinage portrait of the King, by Martin Jennings. Its £5 design list shows the 2023 Year of the Rabbit still carried Jody Clark's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.

Is the Year of the Dragon £5 legal tender?

Yes. The proclamation of 19 July 2023 makes the cupro-nickel coin legal tender for any amount in the United Kingdom. The Royal Mint describes crowns as souvenirs, though, and says banks are not required to accept them.

How do I identify the 2024 5 Pounds - Charles III Year of the Dragon?

Check the weight 28.28g and diameter 38.61mm and the metal (copper-nickel) against the specification table on this page. The reverse design is described above.

History and design

The Year of the Dragon £5 is the 2024 coin in the Royal Mint's Lunar series, which follows the animals of the Chinese zodiac. The Mint calls it a celebration of the dragon's symbolism in Chinese culture, where those born under the sign are said to share its confidence, courage and adventurousness.

It was a first in two ways. The Royal Mint describes it as the first Lunar coin to carry the official coinage portrait of King Charles III, and it was the first coin design by William Webb. The Mint's Meet the Maker article calls it the penultimate release in its Shēngxiào Collection celebrating the Chinese zodiac.

Like other modern £5 crowns it was made for collectors. The Royal Mint has published no struck or sold figure, and no issue limit appears on its product page.

William Webb is a freelance designer and illustrator based in St Leonards-on-Sea, East Sussex, whose clients include The New York Times, the National Trust and the V&A. He had entered coin design competitions for some time without success before this design was chosen. He looked to the dragon paintings and woodcuts of Hokusai and to Chinese sculpted dragon heads, then drew about 20 rough sketches before refining a dozen.

His dragon looks straight out of the coin. In his words, "The dragon's head had to be dead centre, looking straight at you", with the body coiled like a spring above a calm lake. The proclamation describes a depiction of a dragon with the inscription YEAR OF THE DRAGON ·, the date and the Chinese lunar symbol for a dragon.

The obverse carries Martin Jennings's portrait of the King with CHARLES III D G REX F D 5 POUNDS and the date. The edge is milled.

Collecting notes

No recognised varieties or mint errors are documented for this coin.

The Brilliant Uncirculated coin was sold in a Royal Mint pack. The dragon's face sits at the centre of the design, so check it first for rubbing on a loose coin.

The same proclamation authorised gold and silver coins with this design, but its silver coins are 2, 10 and 500 pound pieces, not a silver £5. Webb went on to design the 2025 railway £2 and, in the Mint's £5 list, the 2026 Year of the Horse.

The coin is legal tender for any amount, though banks are not obliged to accept crowns. The next coin in the series is the Year of the Snake £5.
