History and design
This is a collector version of the 5 Pounds - Charles III Bond Films of the 1980s. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.
The Bond Films of the 1980s £5 is the third coin in the Royal Mint's Six Decades of 007 collection, a seven-coin series with one coin for each decade of the James Bond films and a final completer coin. It is dated 2024 and covers the years in which Roger Moore handed the role to Timothy Dalton. The Mint names For Your Eyes Only, Octopussy, The Living Daylights and Licence To Kill among the films it marks. The series is licensed, made in partnership with EON Productions and Danjaq.
It is a commemorative crown sold to collectors, not a coin issued into change. The Royal Mint says £5 crowns "are intended as souvenirs rather than for everyday use, and are therefore rarely found in circulation". The Mint has published no striking or sales figure for this coin: its commemorative coin sales pages stop at coins dated 2023, and the product page gives no issue limit for the base-metal version. For scale, those pages show 11,232 Brilliant Uncirculated coins sold of the 1960s design and 10,229 of the 1970s design, plus coins in trade packaging.
The reverse is by Matt Dent and Christian Davies of the design agency Bison Bison. It shows the Bede BD-5J Acrostar microjet from the pre-title sequence of Octopussy, with Bond in the cockpit. Behind the jet run the titles of the decade's films, with Octopussy the most prominent, and below it sits the 007 logo drawn as it appeared in the 1980s. The border recreates the gun barrel that opens the films.
The royal proclamation describes the reverse as James Bond flying a light jet aircraft set against a background of James Bond titles and the inscription 007. The obverse carries Martin Jennings's portrait of Charles III with the inscription CHARLES III D G REX F D 5 POUNDS and the date. The edge is milled.
