History and design
This is a collector version of the 5 Pounds - Charles III Bond Films of the 1990s. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.
The fourth coin in the Royal Mint's Six Decades of 007 collection covers the James Bond films of the 1990s, the decade in which Pierce Brosnan took over the role from Timothy Dalton. The Mint lists GoldenEye, Tomorrow Never Dies and The World Is Not Enough as the films it marks. The coin is dated 2024 and belongs to a seven-coin series, one for each decade plus a completer coin, produced under licence with EON Productions and Danjaq.
Like every modern £5 crown it was made for collectors. The Royal Mint describes these coins as "souvenirs rather than for everyday use", and none are issued through banks into change. No striking or sales figure has been published for this coin, because the Mint's commemorative sales pages currently end with coins dated 2023. The product page for the base-metal coin states no issue limit.
Matt Dent and Christian Davies of the agency Bison Bison chose the boat chase that opens The World Is Not Enough. The reverse shows the Q Boat at speed with Bond in the driving seat. In the film it is a jet-powered craft built by Q at MI6 headquarters, and the Mint notes that this was the last Bond film to feature Desmond Llewelyn as Q.
The background is made up of the decade's film titles, with The World Is Not Enough given the most room. The 007 logo is drawn in its 1990s form and a gun barrel forms the border, as on the other coins in the set. The royal proclamation describes the design as the speedboat from the film set against a background of James Bond titles and the inscription 007. The obverse has Martin Jennings's portrait of Charles III, with CHARLES III D G REX F D 5 POUNDS and the date. The edge is milled.
