How many Tudor Dragon £5 coins were made?
No struck or sold figure has been published for the cupro-nickel coin, because the Royal Mint's commemorative sales pages stop at 2023-dated coins and the Brilliant Uncirculated page gives no limit. The 2oz gold proof version of the design had a maximum coin mintage of 56.
Who designed the Tudor Dragon £5 coin?
David Lawrence, the artist behind every coin in the Royal Tudor Beasts collection. He was inspired by the stone dragon on the Moat Bridge at Hampton Court Palace. The obverse portrait of King Charles III is by Martin Jennings.
Why is the Tudor Dragon on a coin?
It is one of the ten heraldic beasts Henry VIII placed on the Moat Bridge at Hampton Court. The Royal Mint says the House of Tudor adopted the dragon to show its royal Welsh heritage, and that the red dragon was an emblem of Owen Tudor, Henry VIII's great-grandfather.
Is the Tudor Dragon the same coin as the Welsh dragon £5?
No. The Tudor Dragon is a 2024 Royal Tudor Beasts coin by David Lawrence showing the dragon with a portcullis shield. The Royal Mint's £5 design list also includes the 2018 Red Dragon of Wales by Jody Clark, an earlier and separate design.
How do I identify the 2024 5 Pounds - Charles III Tudor Dragon?
Check the weight 28.28g and diameter 38.61mm and the metal (copper-nickel) against the specification table on this page. The reverse design is described above.
History and design
The Tudor Dragon £5 was announced by the Royal Mint on 19 February 2024 as the latest coin in its ten-coin Royal Tudor Beasts collection, made with Historic Royal Palaces. In the order of the Mint's £5 design list it is the sixth beast, following the Seymour Unicorn.
The collection honours the stone creatures Henry VIII commissioned for the Moat Bridge at Hampton Court Palace to display the power of the House of Tudor. The Mint explains that the Tudors adopted the dragon to stress their royal Welsh heritage, which they traced back to the seventh century, and that the red dragon was a prominent emblem of Owen Tudor, Henry VIII's great-grandfather. On the bridge it stands as a guardian of the palace gates.
This is a collector coin. The Mint describes £5 crowns as souvenirs, and no struck or sold figure has been published for it.
The reverse is by David Lawrence, whose designs for the series blend naturalistic detail with stylised heraldry. Working from the stone sculpture at Hampton Court, he shows the dragon holding a shield emblazoned with the Beaufort Portcullis, which the Mint presents as a symbol of valour and bravery. The proclamation gives the inscription · TUDOR DRAGON · and the date.
The obverse carries Martin Jennings's portrait of King Charles III with CHARLES III D G REX F D 5 POUNDS and the date. The edge is milled.
Collecting notes
No recognised varieties or mint errors are documented for this coin.
The Brilliant Uncirculated coin was sold in a pack designed with Historic Royal Palaces. On a loose example check the dragon's head and the portcullis grid, which carry the finest detail.
The precious-metal coins are larger than the crown. The silver proof £5 is specified at 62.86g and 40mm, and the 2oz gold proof, a 200 pound coin, had a maximum coin mintage of 56. Bullion coins with the same dragon add their weight and fineness to the inscription. The 1oz silver proof has the edge inscription HAMPTON COURT PALACE· ROYAL TUDOR BEASTS.
The coin is legal tender for any amount, though banks are not required to accept crowns. The series continues from the Seymour Unicorn £5 to the Queen's Panther £5.
