History and design

This is a collector version of the 5 Pounds - Charles III The Greyhound of Richmond. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.

The Greyhound of Richmond £5 is the eighth commemorative coin in the Royal Mint's Royal Tudor Beasts Collection, made with Historic Royal Palaces. The series takes its subjects from the ten stone beasts on the Moat Bridge at Hampton Court Palace, which represent the lineage of Henry VIII and his third wife, Jane Seymour.

The Royal Mint traces the greyhound to Edward III and the House of Lancaster. Henry VIII's grandfather Edmund Tudor, Earl of Richmond, adopted it, and the white hound became known as the White Greyhound of Richmond. For Henry VIII it stood for both Lancaster and Tudor, reinforcing his claim to the throne through both houses.

The coin is dated 2025 and was sold to collectors in a fold-out wallet on the history and heraldry of Henry VIII. It was not issued for circulation.

David Lawrence, whose work features on all ten coins in the collection, created a modern interpretation of the statue. The Moat Bridge greyhound stands upright and alert with pricked ears and a crown collar, and it differs from the other beasts in holding a shield of the kind used in jousting, one of Henry VIII's favourite sports.

The royal proclamation describes the reverse as a depiction of the Greyhound of Richmond with the inscription GREYHOUND OF RICHMOND and the date. The obverse has Martin Jennings's portrait of King Charles III with CHARLES III D G REX F D 5 POUNDS and the date. The edge is milled.
