History and design
This is a collector version of the 5 Pounds - Charles III Freddie Mercury. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.
The Freddie Mercury £5 was unveiled by the Royal Mint on 18 November 2025 as the latest coin in its Music Legends series, which has also honoured David Bowie, George Michael, Shirley Bassey and Paul McCartney. Mercury's band had already appeared on the 2020 Queen £5 by Chris Facey, the earliest Music Legends coin in the Mint's £5 design list. The coin was officially approved by Mercury Songs Ltd, and Mercury's sister, Kashmira Bulsara, visited the Mint to strike the first one.
The Mint timed it for two anniversaries in 2025: forty years since Queen's performance at Live Aid in July 1985, and forty years since Mercury's first solo studio album, Mr. Bad Guy. A gold proof version was gifted to the Mercury Phoenix Trust, the AIDS charity founded in his memory, to be auctioned.
Like all modern crowns it is a collector coin, and no struck or sold figure has been published.
The reverse is by Henry Gray, who also designed the 2025 John Lennon £5. It shows Mercury centre stage, mid-performance, with his signature beside the portrait. Two details carry the story: a musical stave running around the design from bass to treble notes stands for his four-octave range, and the studded border is drawn from the armband of his Live Aid outfit. The proclamation describes a depiction of Freddie Mercury surrounded by a studded border, with his signature and the inscription FREDDIE MERCURY.
The obverse has Martin Jennings's portrait of King Charles III with CHARLES III D G REX F D 5 POUNDS and the date. The edge is milled.
