History and design

This is a collector version of the 5 Pounds - Charles III Princess Anne. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.

Princess Anne, The Princess Royal, was born on 15 August 1950, the second child and only daughter of Elizabeth II and Prince Philip. For her 75th birthday the Royal Mint issued a £5 crown, revealed and put on sale on 18 July 2025. The Mint said it was the first time she had been honoured on an official UK coin and that she had personally approved the design.

The Mint's account of her career gives the reasons for the tribute. She has carried out royal duties since the age of 18, has been president of Save the Children UK since 1970 and is patron of more than 300 organisations. In 1976 she became the first member of the British Royal Family to compete at an Olympic Games, riding in the equestrian events at Montreal. She was given the title of Princess Royal in 1987.

The coin was sold to collectors and was not made for circulation. No struck or sold figure has been published.

The reverse is by Thomas T. Docherty, a Royal Mint coin designer who earlier designed the coin for the Prince of Wales's 40th birthday. It is based on an official portrait photograph by John Swannell, supplied by Buckingham Palace, and shows the princess wearing the Aquamarine Pineflower Tiara, which was created by Cartier. Her coat of arms is to the right of the portrait.

Around the design run the inscriptions THE PRINCESS ROYAL and CELEBRATING 75 YEARS, DUTY AND DEVOTION. Docherty said that "the portrait reflects her strength of character and unwavering commitment to duty".

The obverse has Martin Jennings's portrait of King Charles III with the inscription CHARLES III D G REX F D 5 POUNDS and the date 2025. The edge is milled.
