Common questions
How much is the 2025 5 Pounds - Charles III Flax and Shamrock - Northern Ireland worth?
No verified sale of the 2025 5 Pounds - Charles III Flax and Shamrock - Northern Ireland has been logged on MyCoinage yet.
Why are flax and a shamrock on this £5 coin?
Both plants have represented Northern Ireland on Royal Mint coins. The Mint names the shamrock as Northern Ireland's flower on the King's national flowers £2, and its £1 design list describes the 1986 and 1991 round pound by Leslie Durbin as a flax plant representing Northern Ireland.
How many flax and shamrock £5 coins were made?
There is no published figure. The Royal Mint's commemorative coin sales pages run only to 2023-dated coins, and no product page or issue limit for this coin was found, so neither a mintage nor a sales total can be given.
Is the flax and shamrock £5 legal tender?
Yes. The proclamation that authorised it makes the cupro-nickel coin legal tender for any amount anywhere in the United Kingdom. The Royal Mint treats crowns as souvenirs rather than coins for everyday use, and banks are not required to accept them.
How do I identify the 2025 5 Pounds - Charles III Flax and Shamrock - Northern Ireland?
Check the weight 28.28g and diameter 38.61mm and the metal (copper-nickel) against the specification table on this page. The reverse design is described above.
History and design
The flax and shamrock £5 is one of four floral crown reverses set out in a single royal proclamation, given at Buckingham Palace on 18 December 2024. The other three pair a rose with an oak leaf, a thistle with a bluebell, and a daffodil with a leek. The proclamation authorises the design only on a cupro-nickel crown.
Both plants have stood for Northern Ireland on earlier Royal Mint coins. The Mint's £1 design list describes the round pound of 1986 and 1991 by Leslie Durbin as a flax plant and royal diadem representing Northern Ireland, and in October 2023 the Mint chose the shamrock to stand for Northern Ireland on King Charles III's national flowers £2.
The Royal Mint has published nothing on how this crown was sold. It is missing from the Mint's £5 design list, and there is no struck or sold figure.
According to the proclamation the reverse is a depiction of a flax and a shamrock accompanied by the inscription FIVE POUNDS. No designer is credited in any source found.
The obverse shows the King's effigy with CHARLES III D G REX F D 5 POUNDS and the date of the year. The Royal Mint gives Martin Jennings as the designer of the portrait on £5 crowns from 2022. The proclamation specifies a grained edge, listed by the Mint as milled.
Collecting notes
No recognised varieties or mint errors are documented for this coin.
Because the Royal Mint has not documented this coin, check a listing closely: the reverse should show flax and a shamrock with FIVE POUNDS, and the obverse the King's portrait. Ask the seller for the original packaging and any certificate, which may show how the coin was issued.
The coin is legal tender for any amount, but the Mint notes that banks need not accept crowns. Collectors interested in the flax emblem may also look at the 1986 Northern Irish flax £1 and the thistle and bluebell £5.
