History and design

This is a collector version of the 5 Pounds - Charles III John Lennon. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.

The John Lennon £5 was announced by the Royal Mint on 14 March 2025 and went on sale three days later. It was released in the year in which Lennon would have celebrated his 85th birthday, and it joined the Music Legends series after Queen, David Bowie, Shirley Bassey and Paul McCartney.

The Mint framed the coin around Lennon as an advocate for peace as much as a musician. Its own article on him recalls the 1969 bed-ins with Yoko Ono in Amsterdam and Montreal, the WAR IS OVER! IF YOU WANT IT billboards set up in 12 cities at the end of that year, and his 1972 Madison Square Garden concerts for children with learning disabilities, his last full-length shows.

This is a collector coin. No struck or sold figure has been published, and the Mint calls £5 crowns souvenirs rather than coins for everyday use.

The reverse is by Henry Gray, an experienced coin designer whose other Music Legends work includes the Freddie Mercury £5. He built it around a side-profile photograph by Bob Gruen, taken on the roof of Lennon's New York penthouse. Lennon's name runs to the left of the portrait and IMAGINE to the right, which the Mint describes as the title of his most famous politically charged song. The royal proclamation lists the inscriptions JOHN LENNON and IMAGINE.

The obverse carries Martin Jennings's portrait of King Charles III with CHARLES III D G REX F D 5 POUNDS and the date. The edge is milled.
