History and design

This is a collector version of the 5 Pounds - Charles III Seymour Unicorn. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.

The Seymour Unicorn £5 is the fifth coin in the Royal Mint's ten-coin Royal Tudor Beasts collection, made with Historic Royal Palaces, the charity that cares for Hampton Court Palace. The Mint revealed it on 25 September 2023, and the coin is dated 2024. The collection honours the ten stone beasts on the palace's Moat Bridge, which represent the lineage of Henry VIII and his third wife, Jane Seymour.

The unicorn was Henry's gift to Jane Seymour. The Mint says it rarely featured as a heraldic beast before it was chosen for the bridge, and that its symbolism of purity and fertility made it a fitting choice for a new queen, given Henry's desire for a son and heir. It stands opposite the King's Lion of England as Jane Seymour's chief supporter.

Like all modern £5 crowns it was sold to collectors. No struck or sold figure has been published.

The reverse is by David Lawrence, the illustrator and sculptor whose work appears on every coin in the collection, combining naturalistic detail with stylised heraldry. He worked from the stone sculpture at Hampton Court. The unicorn holds a shield bearing Queen Jane's arms, and, unlike the Unicorn of Scotland, wears a royal coronet on its head and a wreath of flowers around its neck. The proclamation gives the inscription · SEYMOUR UNICORN · and the date.

The obverse carries Martin Jennings's portrait of King Charles III with CHARLES III D G REX F D 5 POUNDS and the date. In the Mint's £5 design list it is the second Tudor Beasts coin with the King's portrait, after the 2023 Bull of Clarence. The edge is milled.
