History and design
This is a collector version of the 5 Pounds - Charles III Queen's Panther. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.
The Queen's Panther £5 is part of the Royal Mint's Royal Tudor Beasts Collection, made with Historic Royal Palaces. The series is based on the ten stone beasts on the Moat Bridge at Hampton Court Palace, which represent the lineage of Henry VIII and his third wife, Jane Seymour. It began in 2022 with the Seymour Panther, and in the Mint's £5 design list the Queen's Panther is the seventh beast, after the Tudor Dragon.
The Mint's account explains why Henry VIII needed this beast. He gave the panther to Jane Seymour to affirm her legitimacy as queen, and that of any children of the marriage. The panthers on the bridge began as leopards representing Anne Boleyn, and after her execution Henry had them altered rather than replaced, creating the Seymour Panther and the Queen's Panther. On the bridge the Queen's Panther stands opposite the Tudor Dragon and is the last of the beasts a visitor meets before entering the palace.
The coin was sold to collectors as a Brilliant Uncirculated crown. The Royal Mint has published no struck or sold figure and gives no issue limit for it.
The reverse is by David Lawrence, whose work appears on every coin in the series. It shows the panther holding a shield with the impaled arms of Henry VIII and Jane Seymour. The left half of the shield carries the King's quartered arms and the right half her Coat of Augmentation, which shows her descent from five families. That shield is what separates the Queen's Panther from the Seymour Panther. In heraldry the panther is usually shown "incensed", with flames issuing from its mouth and ears, a reference to its fragrant breath.
The royal proclamation describes a depiction of the Queen's Panther with the inscription QUEEN'S PANTHER and the date. The obverse has Martin Jennings's portrait of King Charles III with the inscription CHARLES III D G REX F D 5 POUNDS and the date 2025. The edge is milled.
