History and design

This is a collector version of the 5 Pounds - Charles III Royal Coat of Arms. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.

For Charles III the heraldic artist Timothy Noad drew the rendering of the Royal Arms that appears on the reverse of the King's Great Seal of the Realm, which the King approved at a Privy Council meeting in May 2025, around the second anniversary of his Coronation. The same Arms appear on official documents such as UK passports and on public buildings and churches.

To mark the new Seal the Royal Mint released this £5 crown, announced on 10 May 2025. The Mint said it was the first time King Charles III's Arms had appeared on a UK £5 coin, and offered it in gold, silver and Brilliant Uncirculated editions.

The cupro-nickel coin was sold to collectors. The Royal Mint has published no struck or sold figure and gives no issue limit for it.

The reverse is Timothy Noad's rendering of the Royal Arms, the same design that appears on the reverse of the Great Seal. Noad is a heraldic artist whose earlier coin work includes the floral and heraldic round £1 designs of 2013 to 2015. The royal proclamation describes the reverse simply as a depiction of the King's Royal Coat of Arms with the date of the year, so there is no separate reverse inscription.

The obverse has Martin Jennings's portrait of King Charles III with the inscription CHARLES III D G REX F D 5 POUNDS and the date 2025. The edge is milled.
