Check the weight 28.28g and diameter 38.61mm and the metal (copper-nickel) against the specification table on this page. The reverse design is described above.

History and design

The Maid Marian £5 is the fifth commemorative coin in the Royal Mint's Myths and Legends collection and the second of three coins given to the tales of Robin Hood, between the Robin Hood coin and Little John. The Mint calls her "a legendary heroine, known for her courage, wit and sense of adventure" and a leading figure among the Merry Men. The coin is dated 2024; its royal proclamation came into force on 22 February 2024.

It was sold to collectors rather than issued into change. The Royal Mint describes £5 crowns as "souvenirs rather than for everyday use" and has struck none to a circulating standard since 2008. No striking or sales figure has been published for this coin, since the Mint's commemorative sales pages end with coins dated 2023. For scale, the 2023 King Arthur coin in the same collection sold 9,716 Brilliant Uncirculated coins plus 5,980 in trade packaging.

The reverse is by Jody Clark, described by the Mint as an experienced coin designer, whose portrait of Elizabeth II appeared on £5 crowns from 2015 to 2022. It is a modern interpretation of Maid Marian, shown among the greenery of Sherwood Forest. The Mint's description of Clark's Maid Marian on its 2023 bullion coin adds that she is poised for action, watching her surroundings, with a bow and a quiver of arrows on her back.

The royal proclamation describes the reverse as a depiction of Maid Marian with the inscription MAID MARIAN · MYTHS AND LEGENDS · and the date. The obverse carries Martin Jennings's portrait of Charles III with CHARLES III D G REX F D 5 POUNDS and the date. The edge is milled.

Collecting notes

The Brilliant Uncirculated coin was sold singly, and the Mint also offered a subscription to the three-coin Robin Hood collection. Check the figure and the surrounding foliage, where rubbing and contact marks show first.

The 2oz silver proof (62.86g, 40mm) carries the same design and had a maximum coin mintage of 506. Clark's Maid Marian also appears on the Mint's Myths and Legends bullion coins, which are a separate investment range.

The coin is legal tender, but the Royal Mint notes that "while crowns are legal tender, banks are not required to accept them". The final coin of the trilogy is the Little John £5.
