History and design
The George Michael £5 is a 2024 coin in the Royal Mint's Music Legends series, which had already honoured David Bowie, Elton John and Queen. It was the first time George Michael appeared on a UK coin. The Mint released it on 26 February 2024, the design having been officially approved by his estate, and the range page recalls his rise from WHAM! to a solo career of more than 125 million records sold.
It is a collector coin, not one issued into change. The Royal Mint describes £5 crowns as "souvenirs rather than for everyday use" and has struck none to a circulating standard since 2008. No striking or sales figure has been published for this coin, because the Mint's commemorative sales pages stop at coins dated 2023. For scale, the 2023 Dame Shirley Bassey £5 in the same series sold 5,215 Brilliant Uncirculated coins, 9,187 in trade packaging and 2,222 in colour.
The reverse is by the artist and sculptor Sandra Deiana and takes its cue from the music video for Faith, his second solo single. It shows the well-known headshot of George Michael in his trademark sunglasses. Deiana said she wanted a portrait that caught "his piercing gaze and charismatic expression".
The lines that fill the background are music. Deiana used software that turns the sound waves of a recording into a graphic and set the refrain of Faith into the design as vertical lines. "What you see in the design is truly a piece of George Michael's song," she said. The royal proclamation describes the reverse simply as a depiction of George Michael with the inscription GEORGE MICHAEL.
The obverse carries Martin Jennings's portrait of Charles III with CHARLES III D G REX F D 5 POUNDS and the date. The edge is milled.
Collecting notes
The plain Brilliant Uncirculated coin came with a booklet telling the story of his life. A colour-printed version was sold in its own bespoke packaging with a maximum coin mintage of 7,510. It has a separate entry, the colour George Michael £5.
The silver proof is a larger coin. The proclamation sets the £5 silver piece at 62.86g and 40mm, against 28.28g and 38.61mm for the cupro-nickel crown.
The coin is legal tender for any amount, but the Royal Mint notes that "while crowns are legal tender, banks are not required to accept them". Check the portrait and the fine sound-wave lines for contact marks, which show quickly on a coin that has left its pack.
