History and design

This is a collector version of the 5 Pounds - Charles III Buckingham Palace. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.

The Royal Mint struck the Buckingham Palace £5 for 2024 in collaboration with Royal Collection Trust, to honour the royal residence and the architects, artists and monarchs who shaped it over the past 300 years. It was one of five new commemorative designs revealed on 28 December 2023 and was the crown in the 2024 annual sets, which went on sale on 2 January 2024. The Mint then launched it as an individual coin on 11 March 2024.

This is a collector coin, not a circulating one. The Royal Mint describes £5 crowns as "souvenirs rather than for everyday use", and it has published no striking or sales figure for this one, since its commemorative sales pages end with coins dated 2023. No issue limit is stated for the base-metal coin.

The reverse is by the artist Henry Gray, whose earlier coin work includes designs for the British Red Cross and Alexander Graham Bell. It shows the Palace facade head on, flying the Royal Standard, which signals that the monarch is in residence. The surrounding border is a pattern taken from the balustrade of the Grand Staircase inside the Palace, and the inscription reads BUCKINGHAM PALACE.

Gray has said the brief first asked for views that challenged the familiar front elevation, and that he drew many angles and interior details before the facade was chosen. He described the task as "squeezing 108 metres of ornamental architecture onto a pocket-sized canvas".

The obverse carries Martin Jennings's portrait of Charles III with the inscription CHARLES III D G REX F D 5 POUNDS and the date. The edge is milled.
