Common questions

How much is the 2018 10 Pence - Elizabeth II – Q - Queuing worth?

Verified sold prices for the 2018 10 Pence - Elizabeth II – Q - Queuing run from £3.31 to £8.87 across 4 grades, taking the median for each grade. Condition makes the difference, so check the grade table above before pricing one.

How many Queuing 10p coins were made?

The Royal Mint's circulating figures give 220,000 dated 2018 and 83,000 dated 2019, a total of 303,000. The 2019 figure is 1,000 below the 84,000 recorded for most letters in the series that year.

Is the Queuing 10p rare?

Its 2019 issue is slightly scarcer than most of the series, at 83,000 against the usual 84,000. Only R, W, Y and Z had lower 2019 figures. The 2018 coin has the same 220,000 as every other letter of that date.

Which is scarcer, the 2018 or 2019 Queuing 10p?

The 2019 coin. The Royal Mint lists 83,000 dated 2019 against 220,000 dated 2018. The reverse design is identical on both, so the date on the obverse is the only way to tell them apart.

Who designed the Queuing 10p?

The Royal Mint and Coin Hunter both credit the reverse to The Royal Mint Team, without naming an individual. The obverse carries the fifth portrait of Elizabeth II, by Jody Clark.

How do I identify the 2018 10 Pence - Elizabeth II – Q - Queuing?

Check the weight 6.5g and diameter 24.5mm and the metal (nickel plated steel) against the specification table on this page. The reverse design is described above.

History and design

Queuing is the letter Q in the Royal Mint's A to Z 10p series, 26 circulating coins revealed on 1 March 2018 as The Great British Coin Hunt: Quintessentially British A to Z. It is one of the few letters that celebrates a habit instead of a place, a food or an object. The Mint's verse pairs it with another national trait: "Apologising unnecessarily and forming a queue".

The Royal Mint's page says queuing was established as a social norm in the early 19th century. It suggests Britain gained its reputation for it during major historical events, including the industrial revolution, when more people gathered in towns and cities and the need for order became apparent. Shops, taxi ranks and chip shops are the Mint's present-day examples.

The Q coin is the first letter in the alphabet to break from the standard mintage. The Royal Mint's circulating figures give 220,000 for 2018, the same as every letter, but 83,000 for 2019, where most letters have 84,000. The total is 303,000.

The reverse shows a line of people queuing through a large letter Q, so the letter itself becomes the thing they are waiting to pass through. Change Checker lists the coin as Q, Queue, and the Royal Mint as Q, Queuing.

The Royal Mint and Coin Hunter both credit the reverse to The Royal Mint Team. The obverse has the fifth portrait of Elizabeth II by Jody Clark, with the denomination and date. The coin is nickel-plated steel with a milled edge.

Collecting notes

The date matters a little more here than on most letters. In the Royal Mint's figures for 2019, 21 letters have 84,000, Q has 83,000, R has 64,000, and W, Y and Z have 63,000 each. That makes the 2019 Q coin the fifth lowest of the 26, though the gap to the standard figure is only 1,000 coins.

The 2018 coin is no different from its sister letters, at 220,000.

The Royal Mint also sold the coin uncirculated and as a sterling silver proof dated 2018, the same size and weight as the circulating coin. The letters either side are P, Post Box and R, Robin, the latter a good deal scarcer for 2019.
