Which Robin 10p is the scarce one?

History and design

The Robin 10p is the letter R coin in the Royal Mint's A to Z series, the 26 circulating 10p coins revealed on 1 March 2018 as The Great British Coin Hunt: Quintessentially British A to Z. For collectors it is one of the letters that matters most, because its second date is among the lowest in the whole series.

The Royal Mint's circulating figures give 220,000 dated 2018, the same as every letter. For 2019 the figure is 64,000, where most letters have 84,000. Only W, Y and Z are lower, at 63,000 each. The R total across both dates is 284,000. Change Checker scores the coin 100 on its own scarcity index and classes it as very scarce.

On the bird itself, the Royal Mint says the robin has been officially named the UK's favourite bird and is found in hedgerows, gardens, parks and woodlands. Its page gives a length of 14cm, a wingspan of 20 to 22cm and a weight of 14 to 21g. It adds that robins are less friendly than they look: they are aggressively territorial and drive off other robins.

The reverse shows a robin inside a large letter R, surrounded by snowflakes. The winter setting fits the bird's place on Christmas cards, which the Royal Mint mentions, and its verse for the letter speaks of "the cold winter snow".

The Royal Mint credits the reverse to The Royal Mint Team, while Coin Hunter names P J Lynch. The obverse is Jody Clark's fifth portrait of Elizabeth II with the denomination and date. The edge is milled.

Collecting notes

Always check the date. A 2018 Robin is a standard A to Z coin, while a 2019 Robin is the fourth lowest of the 26 letters for that year in the Royal Mint's figures. The reverse gives no clue, so the obverse has to be read.

When buying a coin described as 2019, make sure the obverse and its date can be seen.

The Royal Mint also sold the coin uncirculated in both years and as a sterling silver proof dated 2018, which shares the circulating coin's design. The other low 2019 letters include W, World Wide Web and Y, Yeoman Warder.
