History and design

The letter B in the Royal Mint's A to Z 10p series went to Bond, James Bond. The Mint revealed 26 ten pence designs on 1 March 2018, one for each letter, under the title The Great British Coin Hunt: Quintessentially British A to Z. They were rolled out into circulation, and through selected post offices, from the first week of that month.

Coin World, reporting the launch, says the themes drew on a 2017 poll of UK residents in which Bond was named the favourite character from British fiction and film with 48 per cent of votes, ahead of Harry Potter and Miss Marple. The Royal Mint's page for the coin notes that Ian Fleming created the character in 1953 and that Bond first reached the screen in 1962 in Dr No.

The Royal Mint's figures show 220,000 struck for circulation dated 2018 and 84,000 dated 2019, or 304,000 in all. Every letter had 220,000 in 2018, so B is no scarcer than its sister coins of that date.

The reverse carries the 007 logo next to a large letter B. Coin Hunter describes the setting as a view down a gun barrel. The Royal Mint's page for the coin carries a James Bond trademark notice naming Danjaq LLC and United Artists Corporation.

The Mint credits the reverse to The Royal Mint Team. The obverse has the fifth portrait of Elizabeth II by Jody Clark, with the denomination and date. The coin is nickel-plated steel with a milled edge, as the 10p has been since January 2012.

Collecting notes

Read the date before anything else. The reverse is the same on both issues, and only the obverse date separates the 220,000 coins of 2018 from the 84,000 of 2019. The B coin's 2019 figure is the standard one for that year: 21 of the 26 letters share it, and Q, R, W, Y and Z are lower.

The Royal Mint lists no ordinary 10p for circulation dated 2018 or 2019, so any 10p of those dates in change is an A to Z coin. Coin World reported that the Mint launched a free Great British Coin Hunt app alongside the series for logging finds.

The Mint also sold the coin to collectors in uncirculated condition, alone and in sets of all 26, and as a sterling silver proof dated 2018 with the same design, weight and diameter. Neighbouring letters are A, Angel of the North and C, Cricket.
