History and design

The Post Box 10p is the letter P coin in the A to Z series of 26 circulating 10p coins that the Royal Mint revealed on 1 March 2018 as The Great British Coin Hunt: Quintessentially British A to Z. The Royal Mint spells it Postbox, as one word, and its verse for the letter describes the boxes "standing there proudly in a bold colour red".

The Mint's page gives a short history. The post box, or pillar box, was introduced in 1852, just 12 years after the Penny Black stamp. Green was adopted in 1859 to standardise the boxes, and the red colour was chosen in 1874 to replace it. After the London 2012 Olympics, boxes in the home towns of gold medal winners were painted gold. Citing Royal Mail, the Mint says there are around 115,500 pillar, wall and lamp boxes, and that over 98% of the UK population lives within half a mile of one.

The Royal Mint's circulating figures show 220,000 of the P coin dated 2018 and 84,000 dated 2019, for a total of 304,000.

The Royal Mint credits the reverse to The Royal Mint Team. Coin Hunter names P J Lynch as the designer. The obverse is the fifth portrait of Elizabeth II by Jody Clark, with the denomination and date, and the edge is milled.

Collecting notes

There are two dates with one shared reverse, so turn the coin over and read the obverse. The 84,000 coins of 2019 are fewer than the 220,000 of 2018, but both figures are the standard ones for the series. In the Royal Mint's data only five letters (Q, R, W, Y and Z) fall below 84,000 for 2019.
