History and design

The oak is the letter O in the Royal Mint's A to Z 10p series, the 26 circulating coins revealed on 1 March 2018 under the title The Great British Coin Hunt: Quintessentially British A to Z. The Royal Mint names it Oak Tree, and Change Checker lists it simply as Oak.

The Royal Mint describes the oak as a symbol of strength and endurance. Its page for the coin calls it the national tree for England and Wales and the emblem of County Londonderry in Northern Ireland, and adds that Scotland has its own attachment through the oak barrels used to store whisky. The Mint also points to the old oaks on village greens and in parks, some of them among the oldest trees in the country. Its verse for the letter opens with the proverb: "From tiny acorns mighty oak trees grow".

In the Royal Mint's circulating figures the O coin has 220,000 dated 2018 and 84,000 dated 2019, a total of 304,000.

The reverse does not show a whole tree. It shows an acorn set among oak leaves, arranged around a large letter O. Coin Hunter describes it as a sprig of oak with an acorn.

The Royal Mint credits the reverse to The Royal Mint Team, and Coin Hunter gives the same credit. The obverse carries the fifth portrait of Elizabeth II by Jody Clark, with the denomination and date. The coin is nickel-plated steel with a milled edge.

Collecting notes

Look at the date on the obverse first, since nothing on the reverse separates the 2018 coin from the 2019 one. The 2019 issue is the smaller at 84,000, though 21 of the 26 letters have that same figure in the Royal Mint's data, so the O coin is an average member of the set in both years.

For scale, the Royal Mint struck 33,300,000 ordinary 10p coins dated 2017, and recorded no standard 10p for circulation in 2018 or 2019.
