History and design
This is a collector version of the 50 Pence - Elizabeth II – Peter Rabbit. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.
Peter Rabbit is the only Beatrix Potter character to have a new 50p in each year of the series. The 2018 coin is the third, after the 2016 coin issued for the 150th anniversary of Potter's birth and the 2017 coin for The Tale of Peter Rabbit. It was issued with three other 2018 designs, Flopsy Bunny, The Tailor of Gloucester and Mrs Tittlemouse, under a proclamation made on 13 December 2017.
The Royal Mint's figures give 1,400,000 struck for circulation. The same character had 9,700,000 in 2016 and 19,900,000 in 2017, so the 2018 coin is much the hardest of the three to find. It shares the lowest mintage of any Beatrix Potter 50p with Flopsy Bunny.
Across every 50p in the Royal Mint's circulating figures, only eight issues are lower than 1,400,000. Later Peter Rabbit designs dated 2019 and 2020 are listed among the Royal Mint's 50p designs but not in its circulating mintage figures.
Emma Noble designed the reverse. The proclamation describes it as a depiction of Peter Rabbit with the inscription PETER RABBIT. The Royal Mint says the pose is closely inspired by Potter's own artwork, with his coat, alert expression and fine whiskers, and shows him enjoying a moment of calm as he nibbles on radishes, a reference to his adventures in Mr McGregor's garden.
The obverse carries the fifth portrait of the Queen, by Jody Clark, wearing the George IV State Diadem, with the inscription ELIZABETH II D G REG F D 50 PENCE 2018. The edge is plain.
