History and design
This is a collector version of the 50 Pence - Elizabeth II – Benjamin Bunny. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.
Benjamin Bunny, the lead character of Beatrix Potter's The Tale of Benjamin Bunny, appeared on a 50p in 2017. After the five coins of 2016, issued for the 150th anniversary of Potter's birth, the Royal Mint returned with a second group of four: a new Peter Rabbit, Mr. Jeremy Fisher, Tom Kitten and Benjamin Bunny. The proclamation for all four, made on 15 February 2017, describes them as commemorating her life and work. The Royal Mint notes this was the first time Benjamin Bunny had appeared on an official UK coin.
The Royal Mint's figures give 25,000,000 struck for circulation. No other Beatrix Potter 50p comes close: the 2017 Peter Rabbit is next at 19,900,000, and nothing else in the series reaches 10,000,000.
The figure stands out more widely too. In the Royal Mint's figures it is the highest mintage of any commemorative 50p since the coin was reduced to its present size in 1997, and it is larger than several years of the ordinary Royal Shield 50p. In 2017 itself only 1,800,000 Royal Shield 50p coins were struck for circulation.
Emma Noble designed the reverse. The proclamation describes a portrait of Benjamin Bunny with the inscription BENJAMIN BUNNY. The Royal Mint describes him wearing his oversized tam-o'-shanter, the hat that makes him easy to tell from the Peter Rabbit coins.
The obverse carries the fifth definitive portrait of the Queen, by Jody Clark, with the inscription ELIZABETH II D G REG F D 50 PENCE 2017. As on the rest of the series the value and date are on the obverse. The edge is plain.
