History and design
This is a collector version of the 50 Pence - Elizabeth II – Tom Kitten. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.
The Tom Kitten 50p belongs to the second year of the Royal Mint's Beatrix Potter coins. The series began in 2016 for the 150th anniversary of the author's birth and proved popular enough to continue. In 2017 there were four coins: The Tale of Peter Rabbit, Mr Jeremy Fisher, Tom Kitten and Benjamin Bunny. The proclamation covering all four was made on 15 February 2017 and describes them as commemorating the life and work of Beatrix Potter.
It was the first UK coin to feature Tom Kitten, the kitten from The Tale of Tom Kitten.
The Royal Mint's figures give 9,500,000 struck for circulation. That is the lowest of the four 2017 coins, although only just: Jeremy Fisher had 9,900,000, Peter Rabbit 19,900,000 and Benjamin Bunny 25,000,000. Across the thirteen Beatrix Potter 50p coins in the Royal Mint's circulating figures, eight have lower mintages than Tom Kitten.
Emma Noble designed the reverse, as she did for the whole run of Beatrix Potter character coins. The proclamation describes it as a portrait of Tom Kitten with the inscription TOM KITTEN. The Royal Mint says it shows him in his finest attire, reflecting the mischievous personality he has in the tale.
The obverse carries the fifth portrait of the Queen, by Jody Clark, with the inscription ELIZABETH II D G REG F D 50 PENCE 2017. The value and the date are therefore on the obverse, leaving the reverse to the character and his name. The edge is plain.
