History and design

This is a collector version of the 5 Pounds - Charles III The Spice Girls. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.

The Spice Girls released their debut single, Wannabe, and their debut album, Spice, in 1996. The Royal Mint says they reached number one in 37 countries and launched a Girl Power movement, and calls them the best-selling female group of all time. This £5 crown marks the 30th anniversary and went on sale from the Royal Mint website on 3 March 2026.

The coin joined the Mint's Music Legends series after Freddie Mercury, Elton John, David Bowie, George Michael, Shirley Bassey and Paul McCartney. The Mint calls it the first coin in the series to honour a girl group and the first UK commemorative coin to carry a band's autographs. It was made in partnership with Bravado, Universal Music Group's brand management and merchandise division, and was officially approved by the band. The group said they could never have imagined being "the first female group to be given their very own coin".

The reverse is by Ffion Gwillim, credited in the press release as Ffion Rees (née Gwillim). The Mint's list of £5 designs also credits her with the Tale of Peter Rabbit and Alice's Adventures in Wonderland crowns. Her design shows all five members striking a pose in silhouette beside their authentic autographs. The proclamation describes each of the Spice Girls in silhouette, with each of their signatures and the inscription SPICE GIRLS.

The obverse has Martin Jennings's portrait of King Charles III with the inscription CHARLES III D G REX F D 5 POUNDS and the date 2026. The edge is milled.
