History and design

This is a collector version of the 5 Pounds - Charles III The Angel. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.

The angel was a gold coin introduced in 1465, in the reign of Edward IV. The Royal Mint explains that the noble had been revalued in 1464 to 8 shillings and 4 pence, leaving a need for a coin at its old value of 6 shillings and 8 pence, and the angel filled it, issued with half-angels of 3 shillings and 4 pence. It became the dominant gold coin in circulation for more than a century. Half-angels disappeared under James I and the angel itself ceased under Charles I.

The coin took its name from its design of the Archangel Michael trampling a dragon, which stood for Satan, with a spear angled towards the dragon's mouth. It was also tied to superstition. Many believed monarchs had a divine right to rule and could heal by touch, so angels were used in touching ceremonies, then pierced and hung on a ribbon round the neck. They were thought to protect against scrofula, known as the king's evil.

In 2026 the Royal Mint revived the subject as a £5 crown, alongside gold and silver bullion coins of the same name.

The reverse is by the sculptor Sandra Deiana, a modern interpretation of the Archangel Michael slaying Satan in the form of a dragon. The Royal Mint says parts of the design are struck in higher relief to give a more three-dimensional look. The proclamation gives the inscription as PER CRUCEM TUAM SALVA NOS CHRISTE REDEMPTOR, the same Latin as the historic coin, which the Mint translates as "By thy Cross, save us, O Christ, our Redeemer".

The obverse has Martin Jennings's portrait of King Charles III with the inscription CHARLES III D G REX F D 5 POUNDS and the date 2026. The edge is milled.
