Common questions

How much is the 2025 5 Pounds - Charles III Royal Coat of Arms worth?

Verified sold prices for the 2025 5 Pounds - Charles III Royal Coat of Arms run from £12.93 to £13.96 across 2 grades, taking the median for each grade. Condition makes the difference, so check the grade table above before pricing one.

Is there a colour version of the Coat of Arms £5?

Yes. The Royal Mint sold a Brilliant Uncirculated colour coin alongside the plain one, with the Arms printed in colour on the same cupro-nickel crown. Its product page gives a maximum coin mintage of 5,010 for the colour coin and no limit for the plain coin.

Who designed the Royal Coat of Arms £5?

The heraldic artist Timothy Noad, who has worked at the College of Arms for more than 35 years, drew the new rendering of the Royal Arms used on the reverse. The portrait of King Charles III on the obverse is by Martin Jennings.

How many Coat of Arms £5 coins were made?

No struck or sold figure has been published. The colour Brilliant Uncirculated coin carries a maximum coin mintage of 5,010, which is a ceiling and not a sales total. The plain coin has no stated limit, and the Mint's sales pages stop at 2023-dated coins.

Can I spend a Coat of Arms £5 coin?

It is legal tender for any amount under the proclamation that authorised it. The Royal Mint says the £5 coin is a commemorative issue that does not circulate, that most retailers do not accept it, and that banks are not required to take crowns.

How do I identify the 2025 5 Pounds - Charles III Royal Coat of Arms?

Check the weight 28.28g and diameter 38.61mm and the metal (copper-nickel) against the specification table on this page. The reverse design is described above.

History and design

The Royal Mint released this £5 crown in May 2025 to mark King Charles III's approval of his new Great Seal of the Realm, whose reverse carries the same rendering of the Royal Arms. The Mint announced it on 10 May 2025 and said it was the first time the King's Arms had appeared on a UK £5 coin.

The artwork itself was unveiled by the government on 10 October 2024. It was drawn and painted by the heraldic artist Timothy Noad, who has worked at the College of Arms in London for more than 35 years and also designed the King's cypher. The parts of the Arms are unchanged since Queen Victoria came to the throne in 1837; what is new is the drawing.

Two cupro-nickel versions were sold to collectors: a plain Brilliant Uncirculated coin and a colour one. Neither was made for circulation.

The royal proclamation describes the reverse simply as a depiction of the King's Royal Coat of Arms with the date of the year, so there is no separate legend. The visible change from the late Queen's Arms is the crown: the Royal Mint notes that the crowns in Noad's rendering, including the one worn by the lion supporter, are the Tudor Crown, which replaced the St Edward's Crown used under Elizabeth II. The same Arms now appear on government documents such as UK passports.

The obverse has Martin Jennings's portrait of the King with the inscription CHARLES III D G REX F D 5 POUNDS and the date. The edge is milled. Noad's earlier crowns include the 2023 Coronation £5, and in 2026 he designed the 500 Years of the Crown £5.

Collecting notes

No recognised varieties or mint errors are documented for this coin.

The colour coin is the one to check first. Its reverse is printed in colour, and the Royal Mint gives it a maximum coin mintage of 5,010; the plain coin has no stated limit. That figure is a ceiling set by the Mint, not a count of coins sold, and no sales total has been published for either version.

Heraldic detail is fine and close-set, so look at the shield and supporters for contact marks on any coin out of its pack, and for scuffing to the printed colour. Silver proof, silver piedfort and gold proof £5 coins share the design.

The site holds a second entry for this coin, the Royal Coat of Arms £5. It is legal tender, but the Royal Mint says the £5 coin does not circulate and most retailers will not accept it.
