History and design

This is a collector version of the 5 Pounds - Charles III Robin Hood. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.

The Robin Hood £5 is the fourth commemorative coin in the Royal Mint's Myths and Legends series, after three Arthurian coins dated 2023: King Arthur, Merlin and Morgan le Fay. It also opened a three-coin Robin Hood set within the series, celebrating the outlaw and his companions. Change Checker reported it on 20 November 2023 as the first 2024-dated coin in the series.

The Mint's own account of the legend traces Robin Hood to ballads of the thirteenth century and to a first literary mention in The Vision of Piers Plowman in the late fourteenth century, where a drunken priest knows the rhymes of Robyn Hood better than the Lord's Prayer. It also notes the popular telling in which Robin returns from the Third Crusade to find his lands seized by the Sheriff of Nottingham.

This is a collector coin. The Royal Mint calls £5 crowns souvenirs rather than coins for everyday use, and no struck or sold figure has been published for it.

The reverse is by Jody Clark, whose portrait of Queen Elizabeth II appeared on £5 crowns from 2015 to 2022. It shows Robin Hood perched in the treetops, holding his bow and poised to fire. The Mint calls it a modern interpretation of the archer, whose skill with the bow runs through the tales, including the silver arrow he won in disguise at the Sheriff's tournament. The royal proclamation describes the reverse as a depiction of Robin Hood with the inscription ROBIN HOOD · MYTHS AND LEGENDS · and the date.

The obverse carries Martin Jennings's portrait of King Charles III with the inscription CHARLES III D G REX F D 5 POUNDS and the date 2024. The edge is milled.
