History and design

This is a collector version of the 5 Pounds - Charles III Little John. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.

The Little John £5 is the third and final coin in the Royal Mint's set honouring the tales of Robin Hood, following Robin Hood and Maid Marian, and the sixth commemorative coin in its Myths and Legends collection. The Mint calls Little John Robin Hood's closest companion and "the most loyal of all the Merry Men", a man who bears an ironic name because of his size and often comes to Robin's aid. The coin is dated 2024, and its royal proclamation came into force on 23 May 2024.

Like other modern crowns it is a collector piece. The Royal Mint says £5 crowns are "souvenirs rather than for everyday use" and has not struck any to a circulating standard since 2008. It has published no striking or sales figure for this coin, because its commemorative sales pages stop at coins dated 2023. For comparison, the 2023 Merlin coin in the same collection sold 8,602 Brilliant Uncirculated coins and 5,500 in trade packaging.

Jody Clark designed all three Robin Hood coins. His Little John stands tall among the trees of Sherwood Forest, clutching his quarterstaff. The Mint says the forest setting represents his strength and loyalty. Clark's earlier work includes the portrait of Elizabeth II used on £5 crowns from 2015 to 2022.

The royal proclamation describes the reverse as a depiction of Little John with the inscription LITTLE JOHN · MYTHS AND LEGENDS · and the date. The obverse carries Martin Jennings's portrait of Charles III with CHARLES III D G REX F D 5 POUNDS and the date. The edge is milled.
