History and design
This is a collector version of the 5 Pounds - Charles III Life of Queen Victoria. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.
The Royal Mint issued this £5 crown, dated 2026, to pay homage to the life of one of history's longest-reigning monarchs. The reverse inscription gives the years of Queen Victoria's birth and death, 1819 and 1901, and the Mint sold the coin in packaging that tells her story with insight from her own Journals.
It joins earlier crowns for the same Queen. The Royal Mint's £5 list includes a 2001 crown for the 100th anniversary of her death, designed by Mary Milner-Dickens, and a 2019 crown for the 200th anniversary of her birth, by John Bergdahl. The 2026 coin is a Brilliant Uncirculated collector issue and was not made for circulation.
The reverse is by Edwina Ellis. The royal proclamation describes two depictions of Queen Victoria, one at the start and one towards the end of her reign, accompanied by a lace motif and the inscription 1819 QUEEN VICTORIA 1901. The Royal Mint says the two portraits are based on sculptures of the monarch, and that the intricate design honours the artistry and innovation of the Victorian era.
Ellis is also credited with the 2017 Christmas Tree £5. The obverse carries Martin Jennings's portrait of King Charles III with CHARLES III D G REX F D 5 POUNDS and the date. The edge is milled.
