History and design

This is a collector version of the 5 Pounds - Charles III Liberty's Department Store. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.

Liberty was founded by Arthur Lasenby Liberty in 1875 and grew into a London department store known for its Tudor style building and its floral and paisley prints. For the store's 150th anniversary the Royal Mint worked with Liberty on a commemorative £5 crown, unveiled on 9 May 2025 and on sale from 12 May.

The Mint said it was the first time a fashion house had been celebrated on an official UK coin. The coins went on display at Liberty's flagship store from 12 May as part of an anniversary archive exhibition, alongside a single 1.5kg medallion carrying the same design that the Mint's craftspeople took about three weeks to make.

This is a collector coin. The Royal Mint says crowns have not been struck to a circulating standard since 2008, and it has published no struck or sold figure for this one.

The reverse was created in the Liberty Design studio, not at the Mint, and the Mint credits the Liberty Design Team, naming Liberty's Design Manager Pere Bruach as its creator. It shows the flagship store's architecture with a decorative paisley style motif. Bruach said the coin "features a beautiful hand-painted snapshot of The Liberty Stage print created to mark our 150th anniversary", so the pattern comes from the anniversary fabric collection.

The royal proclamation describes the reverse as a depiction of Liberty London with a decorative paisley style motif and the inscriptions LIBERTY. and 150 YEARS.

The obverse has Martin Jennings's portrait of King Charles III with the inscription CHARLES III D G REX F D 5 POUNDS and the date 2025. The edge is milled.
