History and design
The Royal Mint issued two base-metal versions of its 2025 crown for the 150th anniversary of Liberty: a plain Brilliant Uncirculated coin and the same coin with the reverse printed in colour. The Mint's launch statement said a selection of the coins would be available in colour, "bringing the bold colours Liberty is known for to life on metal".
The coin was unveiled on 9 May 2025 and the full range went on sale on 12 May. It marks the founding of the business by Arthur Lasenby Liberty in 1875. The Mint's director of commemorative coin, Rebecca Morgan, said the £5 marked a chapter in the Mint's history as the first official UK coin to celebrate a fashion house.
Neither version was made for circulation. The Royal Mint says crowns ceased to be struck to a circulating standard from 2008, and its £5 page describes them as souvenirs that are rarely found in change.
The reverse was created in the Liberty Design studio and is credited by the Mint to the Liberty Design Team, with Design Manager Pere Bruach named as its creator. The proclamation describes a depiction of Liberty London with a decorative paisley style motif, with the inscriptions LIBERTY. and 150 YEARS. The Mint says elements of Liberty's anniversary fabric collection appear in the design, and Bruach identified the pattern as The Liberty Stage print.
The obverse carries the portrait of King Charles III by Martin Jennings, the inscription CHARLES III D G REX F D 5 POUNDS and the date 2025. The edge is milled. Both versions are cupro-nickel, 28.28g and 38.61mm.
Collecting notes
No recognised varieties or mint errors are documented for this coin.
The quickest check is the reverse: colour on the design means the limited coin, bare metal means the standard one. The colour coin has a maximum coin mintage of 7,500. That figure is an issue limit set by the Mint, and no sales total has been published for either version, so it cannot yet be said how many of each reached collectors.
The coins were sold by the Royal Mint and were also offered in the shop of the anniversary archive exhibition at Liberty's flagship store, where they were on display from 12 May to the end of July 2025. Colour printing marks easily, so a colour coin that has left its pack should be examined closely.
Silver proof and gold proof £5 coins share the design. The other entry for this coin is the 150 Years of Liberty £5.
