History and design
The Royal Navy £2 is the second coin in the Royal Mint's series for the centenary of the First World War, following the 2014 Kitchener coin. It honours the navy's part in the war, which the Mint sums up as maintaining blockades, protecting trade routes and fighting the key battles at sea.
Two proclamations cover the design. The first, in October 2014, set the legend used with Ian Rank-Broadley's fourth portrait. The second, given on 10 June 2015, covered a single base-metal coin with the legend for Jody Clark's fifth portrait. That later coin is the one struck for circulation.
The Royal Mint's figures record 650,000. Only two circulating £2 coins have a lower total: the 2002 Commonwealth Games coins for Northern Ireland (485,500) and Wales (588,500). The 2015 Britannia £2 has the same 650,000. Check Your Change records the coin reaching circulation in October 2016.
The reverse is by David Rowlands, described by the Royal Mint as a military artist. The proclamation calls the subject a dreadnought at sea, and the Mint identifies the ship as HMS Royal Oak, a Revenge-class battleship commissioned during the war. The inscription reads THE FIRST WORLD WAR 1914-1918, with the date 2015.
The edge is milled, with THE SURE SHIELD OF BRITAIN in incuse letters.
The obverse carries the fifth coinage portrait of Elizabeth II, by Jody Clark. The reverse does not state a value, so the obverse legend ends with 2 POUNDS in figures.
Varieties and errors
Some coins show a raised mark at the top right of the mast that looks like a flying flag. Change Checker looked into whether two designs had been struck and concluded they had not: it puts the mark down to metal filling a crack in the die. Check Your Change lists it as a known die-break variety. It is a die flaw on an otherwise normal coin, and neither source says how many exist.
The Rank-Broadley coin is a separate issue and not an error. It is catalogued as the fourth-portrait Royal Navy £2, which Check Your Change records as sold in sets only.
Edge lettering that reads upside down when the Queen's head faces up is not an error either. The Royal Mint's FAQ explains that the inscription is rolled onto the blank before striking, so it can fall either way.
Collecting notes
Check the obverse first. The circulating coin has Jody Clark's portrait and 2 POUNDS in the legend. The set coin has the older portrait and TWO POUNDS in words.
Look at the mast for the flag mark, then check that the edge inscription is complete. Check Your Change notes that fakes of the fourth-portrait coin exist, so treat any Rank-Broadley example outside its original packaging with care.
The coin remains current and legal tender. Its equal on mintage is the 2015 Britannia £2.
