The 2015 2 Pounds - Elizabeth II – Britannia is a circulating 2 pounds coin issued from 2015 to 2022 in the Britannia Copper series, struck in bimetallic: copper-nickel center in nickel brass ring. It weighs 12g and measures 28.4mm across. Reverse design: Helmeted figure of Britannia with shield and trident facing left.

Mintage figures are recorded for 8 years between 2015 and 2022, 13,827,681 coins in all. 2017 is the scarcest date, with 42,025 struck.

History and design

A new portrait of Elizabeth II, by Jody Clark, was introduced on the coinage in 2015, and the £2 was given a new standard reverse at the same time. A royal proclamation given on 11 February 2015 set out the series from the £2 down to the 1p, and specified a figure of Britannia for the £2. It replaced Bruce Rushin's Technology design, which had been on the coin since 1997.

Few were issued at first. The Royal Mint's figures record 650,000 dated 2015, the joint third lowest circulating £2 mintage in those figures, level with the 2015 Royal Navy £2. The Mint lists 2,925,000 for 2016, none for 2017 to 2020, then 6,045,000 for 2021 and 4,030,000 for 2022: a total of 13,650,000. The Technology £2 was also struck dated 2015, with the earlier portrait, to the number of 35,360,058.

The reverse is by Antony Dufort and shows Britannia holding a shield and a trident, with the words TWO POUNDS. The edge is milled with the incuse inscription QUATUOR MARIA VINDICO, Latin usually translated as "I claim the four seas".

The obverse has the fifth definitive portrait of the Queen, by Jody Clark, used on the £2 from 2015 to 2022, with the legend ELIZABETH II DEI GRA REG FID DEF and the date. The date is on this side because the reverse has none.

Varieties and errors

One error is recorded on the 2015 coin. On the "inverted effigy" £2 the Queen's head is rotated by about 150 degrees against the Britannia side. Change Checker reported on 17 January 2017 that the Royal Mint had confirmed the coins as genuine and had explained them as "almost certainly the result of one of the dies working loose and rotating during the striking process". The Mint gave no number. Change Checker examined 5,000 coins and estimated that about 1 in 200 were affected.

Change Checker warns that a photograph can be rotated to fake the effect, so the coin needs checking in hand. Edge lettering that reads upside down is a separate matter and is not an error, as the Royal Mint has explained.

Collecting notes

The date matters more than anything else on this coin. The 2015 coin is among the scarcest circulating £2 issues, while 2016, 2021 and 2022 were struck in the millions. Coin Hunter records that the 2017 to 2020 dates were not struck for circulation and were sold only in Royal Mint sets.
