History and design

This is a collector version of the 10 Pence - Elizabeth II – U - Union Flag. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.

The Union Flag stands for the letter U in the A to Z 10p series, the 26 coins the Royal Mint issued for circulation in 2018 as The Great British Coin Hunt: Quintessentially British A to Z. The series was revealed on 1 March 2018, and Change Checker describes its coins as the first commemorative UK 10p pieces.

In the Royal Mint's figures 220,000 U coins were issued dated 2018, the same as every other letter. A further 84,000 followed dated 2019, giving 304,000 across both dates. Five letters (Q, R, W, Y and Z) had lower 2019 figures, so the Union Flag coin is one of the 21 standard-mintage designs in the series.

The Mint records no ordinary 10p for circulation in either 2018 or 2019, which means the A to Z coins are the only circulating 10p pieces carrying those dates.

Part of the Union Flag fills the reverse, with a large letter U set on top of it. The Royal Mint describes the flag, often known as the Union Jack, as the national flag of the United Kingdom, combining the red cross of St George, the white saltire of St Andrew and the red saltire of St Patrick. It dates the combined flag to 1801.

The Mint's verse for the coin reads: "With the Union Flag flying proud at full mast, For the future of Britain, our present and past." Its page adds that the flag can be seen flying at Buckingham Palace when the Queen is not in residence.

The reverse is credited to The Royal Mint Team. The obverse has the fifth portrait of Elizabeth II by Jody Clark. The coin is nickel-plated steel, the 10p alloy since January 2012, with a milled edge.
