Common questions
How much is the 2018 10 Pence - Elizabeth II – U - Union Flag worth?
Verified sold prices for the 2018 10 Pence - Elizabeth II – U - Union Flag run from £3.75 to £4.00 across 2 grades, taking the median for each grade. Condition makes the difference, so check the grade table above before pricing one.
How many Union Flag 10p coins were made?
The Royal Mint's circulating figures show 220,000 dated 2018 and 84,000 dated 2019, making 304,000 in all. Most letters in the A to Z series have exactly the same two figures, so the U coin is an average member of the set.
Is the Union Flag 10p rare?
It is scarce compared with ordinary 10p coins, of which the Royal Mint struck 33,300,000 dated 2017. It is not scarce within its own series: five letters (Q, R, W, Y and Z) had lower 2019 figures than the U coin's 84,000.
Is it the Union Flag 10p or the Union Jack 10p?
They are the same coin. The Royal Mint titles it U, Union Flag, and notes that the flag is often known as the Union Jack. Change Checker lists the coin as U, Union Jack, so both names appear in sales listings.
Who designed the Union Flag 10p?
The Royal Mint credits the reverse to The Royal Mint Team and does not name an individual. Coin Hunter gives the same credit. The obverse is Jody Clark's fifth portrait of Elizabeth II, which appears on every coin in the A to Z series.
Which date of the Union Flag 10p is harder to find?
The 2019 coin. The Royal Mint lists 84,000 dated 2019 against 220,000 dated 2018. The reverse is identical on both, so the date beside the Queen's portrait is the only way to tell them apart.
How do I identify the 2018 10 Pence - Elizabeth II – U - Union Flag?
Check the weight 6.5g and diameter 24.5mm and the metal (nickel plated steel) against the specification table on this page. The reverse design is described above.
History and design
The Union Flag stands for the letter U in the A to Z 10p series, the 26 coins the Royal Mint issued for circulation in 2018 as The Great British Coin Hunt: Quintessentially British A to Z. The series was revealed on 1 March 2018, and Change Checker describes its coins as the first commemorative UK 10p pieces.
In the Royal Mint's figures 220,000 U coins were issued dated 2018, the same as every other letter. A further 84,000 followed dated 2019, giving 304,000 across both dates. Five letters (Q, R, W, Y and Z) had lower 2019 figures, so the Union Flag coin is one of the 21 standard-mintage designs in the series.
The Mint records no ordinary 10p for circulation in either 2018 or 2019, which means the A to Z coins are the only circulating 10p pieces carrying those dates.
Part of the Union Flag fills the reverse, with a large letter U set on top of it. The Royal Mint describes the flag, often known as the Union Jack, as the national flag of the United Kingdom, combining the red cross of St George, the white saltire of St Andrew and the red saltire of St Patrick. It dates the combined flag to 1801.
The Mint's verse for the coin reads: "With the Union Flag flying proud at full mast, For the future of Britain, our present and past." Its page adds that the flag can be seen flying at Buckingham Palace when the Queen is not in residence.
The reverse is credited to The Royal Mint Team. The obverse has the fifth portrait of Elizabeth II by Jody Clark. The coin is nickel-plated steel, the 10p alloy since January 2012, with a milled edge.
Collecting notes
Listings call this coin both Union Flag and Union Jack. There is one design, issued with two dates, and the 2019 date is the scarcer of the two at 84,000 against 220,000.

Collector versions exist alongside the circulating coin. The Royal Mint sold a sterling silver proof dated 2018, matching the circulating coin in weight and diameter, and a 2019 uncirculated set containing all 26 letters. Neighbouring letters in the series include T, Tea and V, Village.
