History and design
This is a collector version of the 50 Pence - Elizabeth II – Wallace and Gromit. The history below is that coin's; the mintage, varieties and collecting notes on its page do not apply to this strike.
The Wallace and Gromit 50p was issued in 2019, 30 years after the pair first appeared on screen. A Grand Day Out, the short film in which they travel to the moon in search of cheese, was first shown on 4 November 1989. The Royal Mint produced the coin with Aardman, the studio behind the characters, and noted that the film also launched their creator, Nick Park.
The coin was a collector issue. It is absent from the Royal Mint's circulating mintage figures, where the commemorative 50p coins of 2019 are Sherlock Holmes and the two Paddington designs. The Royal Mint's sales figures show 42,251 Brilliant Uncirculated coins sold in packs and 60,499 in tubes.
The Royal Mint credits the reverse to Nick Park and says it was created by Park and the team at Aardman. It shows Wallace and Gromit as if peering from the porthole of the rocket that took them to the moon. On the silver proof the Mint describes the porthole as riveted.
Two inscriptions accompany the figures. The proclamation gives them as CASEUS PRAESTANS and WALLACE GROMIT. The Royal Mint explains the first as "cracking cheese" put into Latin.
The obverse has the fifth portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Jody Clark, with the inscription ELIZABETH II D G REG F D 50 PENCE and the date 2019. The edge is plain.
